I remember as a child watching the Donny & Marie Show on television. She was a “little bit country” and he was “a little bit rock ‘n roll.” It was decent. So, it was fun to see their family in person after I became a young adult and they became older people. At the end of the high-energy show, the entire Osmond family came on stage and began to sing a hymn; I can’t remember which one. As they were singing, a super-sized image of Jesus was projected on the screen behind them, and the crowd cried and cheered and worshiped. I was confused.
I wasn’t confused about Jesus. I loved him. I wasn’t confused about worship. I thrived to worship. I was confused about why Jesus, here, in this setting, with these people, singing about him and sharing something that sounded like the gospel. I was confused because someone told me the Osmonds were Mormons, but they were sounding like Christians.
I had had, and have had since, many different guys in white shirts and ties, riding on bicycles, stop at my door and begin a conversation with me. They tell me they are Christians, and they tell me I am not because I am not a Mormon. They say things that don’t sound like what I understand about Christianity. Apparently, this happens to a lot of people, and the confusion grows. Clarity can come if we compare Mormon teachings with biblical teachings. We did a mini-lecture to answer the question, “What is the difference between Mormonism and Chrisitianity?” You can listen to it (sorry about the background noise and music; we do these while our worship arts team is practicing in the building; its great music, but distracting). You can download a listening guide. Maybe this mini-lecture will help you. If you have thoughts or questions, comment below. Just make sure you figure out the truth, because you can’t be a little bit Mormon and a little bit rock ‘n roll, otherwise known as, Christianity.
